I greatly enjoyed reading this book. It is suspenseful with humor without the gore, and if you are like me a little skittish, you might want to read some of those stories with the light on.

Ghosts and Other Unpleasantries CS Sahu 9780997578508 Books Reviews

This book has owned up to its name, some of the stories are eerie, funny unsuspecting and even out right spooky. Buy this book you'll be happy that you did.
What a wonderfully written book. If you love ghost stories or if you love books that will cause you to stay awake all night, this is for you. Simply great.
Indeed…this IS a delightful little book keep it on your bedside table for those middle of the night insomnia moments; toss it into your bag or brief case to pull out when waiting in line or in the dentist office; keep it on the kitchen table to prop on the saltcellar for lunch time reading. Whenever or wherever, Sahu’s well drawn, interesting characters, some of whom you will love and others whom you will love to hate, will keep you entertained.

Unlike some compendiums of short stories, Sahu’s eschews the common locale and cast of characters and transports the reader to varied settings where the author’s knack for creating atmosphere makes you feel you are right there with the protagonist. (I can still smell Mrs. Spry’s sugar cookies as well as the dust of the crawlspace in that house on Main Street.) A vivid imagination, well conveyed, takes the reader on a trip where they find themselves in a new time and place at each turn of the corner. Fun.

Since my belief in the supernatural is slim to none, I enjoyed this book more for it’s wry humor than it’s “unpleasantries”, especially the oh-so-many very clever similes and metaphors. (I found myself laughing out loud right where a heroine is facing hair-raising goings-on.) However, the unpleasantries too are quite as clever. If you do keep it on your bedside table, and live alone in an old, isolated, creaky house, I would save this reading for sunny daytime. There is many a hair-raising moment that you would want to savor in secure circumstances.
I have been following Cathy since her days writing for Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine. It's great to finally have a collection of her stories in one place. I can't wait for the next book!
As the stories went along they gained in their eeriness and the last four or five were very good. I was not impressed with the first selections and almost stopped reading but I am glad I pressed on because the stories got better and better.
Since this is a collection of 13 stories, I’ve reviewed them separately

THE BOOK OF THE SERVANT I found the story, at first, a bit hard to get engaged into. It sort of built up suspense, and then seemed to wane for me, until she found the book! Then, I had a moment of thinking it was going to go along the lines of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and she’d get herself into a mess of trouble. But I was completely surprised with the way the story twisted and turned! What an unexpected outcome! It struck me as a story of Karma. Elsie’s true character is what saved her, and Mr. Parsloe got what was coming to him!

THE WATERCOLORIST This was a well done story! A well told “ghost story”, with all of the “experience” one might expect of dealing with the supernatural. What was an added “plus” was the story within a story, in spotlighting the paintings, and how each one, could tell a story of its’ own. That is true for art. It has something it gives to whoever is open to it. (All of these are fictitious stories, however, this one really had the feel of one that had been someone’s life experience)

WIGGY Awesome! Great characters and plot development! This story definitely had the feel of either an Alfred Hitchcock Presents, or Twilight Zone episode. I absolutely LOVED the ending. How eerie!

HER FATHER’S GHOST Wow! How bizarre! This story was definitely a plot twister! It had me (as reader) going from one direction to a complete other way! The entire attic scene was so well in its’ suspense, and then the unfolding of the truth! Incredible! Just how crazy life can get, and how folks can play along, because they want to believe it! Great look at life in this one.

YOU SHOULD HAVE TO LIVE WITH YOURSELF This was genius! What a marvelous idea – but I can’t say anything more or I’ll give it away.

A CURE FOR HYPOCHONDRIA THIS WAS A SCARY STORY! PERIOD. I think because its’ something that is quite possible, and probably has been done.

THE BRIDE IN BLACK This was just a plain weird one. It fits well, as one of the many stories for this collection, but I just kept feeling uncomfortable throughout the story. Perhaps that was the intention? I kept relating to how “warm” the place was through Rita’s experiences, and how her discomfort just kept growing, and finally her frustration in trying to assist in the rescue, and for it all to be in vain. Good comment in regards to those who did all the false séances, and taking people for all they could. I remember reading how Harry Houdini exposed quite a lot of them, back in his day.

LA LLORONA It was pretty much a story I would expect to happen to someone who sits, alone, at night, in a grave yard. An apparition comes, one gets frightened and runs, and then yippee, gets herself rescued! There is good against evil, and a hero…but, again it was fairly predictable.

THREE CANDLES First off, great characters in this one! All of them stand on their own two feet, very well. I was engaged by them (especially Alfie) and how their conversation with each other, develops the story, and moves along the suspense. Secondly, how it builds, and then wanes off, is excellent! The entire story is so strengthened by those candles, and the climax is very a satisfying one. I was thinking of that line from the Bible…Thy sins will seek thee out!

FREE TO GOOD HOME I have never enjoyed such a good story! It develops and moves me (as reader) on such a wonderful ride! I was giggling, snickering, and completely “lost it” (in hysterical laughter) in the part of the conversation between Franny and Johnny on page 154. (I laughed for close to ten minutes on this page!) This by far, was my favorite story of the collection! (Just because I love to laugh!)

A TOMATO, RIPE FROM HER GARDEN I definitely got a feel of a “passion” of gardening in this story. Another good story both from the characters, and from the twists and turns of the plot. It was a very interesting turn of events, with after her murder, how his guilt develops. Creepy, and yet, so engaging to the reader, as what will happen next? Great way to keep the reader turning pages!

HONEY Creepy with a capitol C! This story has such depth. A great testamonial to the connection computer people have with their machines, and not the family of mankind. The whole voyerism of this story is done exceptionally well, give the reader a very strange experience into this world of apartness and isolation. With the ending, however, I was deeply moved.

MEAN MISTER MULLINS Final story was a gem. As I read about the conflicts that Melanie experiences, her goal of becoming a nurse, and dealing with the challenges of patient/family member, I could feel how difficult her life had become. Trying to brave through it all, and achieve her goal. Then, the friction of Mr. Mullins character, and his impact on the story. Great conflict, by the way. It was defintely a surprise the part the doctor plays in this! Again, a great concept in the plot twist arena.
Very entertaining group of stories
I greatly enjoyed reading this book. It is suspenseful with humor without the gore, and if you are like me a little skittish, you might want to read some of those stories with the light on.
